Unconventional Convention Alcon 2016

Over the years I have attended and gave panels to numerous conventions all over Ireland.

From game and multimedia style conventions . But for the first time since my first time since my first convention I have been left speechless about an event.

First Alcon takes place September 1-4 in Leicester, England . Held at De Montfort University. It is probably one of the few only over 18 anime and gaming conventions held in the UK.

At first I really didn’t know what to expect besides the usual array of convention staples such as the cosplay contests, pub quiz etc

What really happened was probably one of the most relaxing and enjoyable events I have ever attended.

First night while I didn’t get to attend much due to flight problems travelling over . I did get to attend the first party of the weekend as I was quickly dragged to the dance floor by a random attendee. Music was a mixture of the pop punk upbeat tracks that kept the majority of the audience on the dance floor until late in the evening.

Friday

Friday probably was one of the high paced days as it Started off strong with Jessica Calvello Get random panel which was light-hearted and humorous. Her ability to connect with people and being immersed with the convention on top of her skill and upbeat energy not only makes her panels one of the biggest highlights of the convention because she made everyone feel so welcome.

Saturday

Saturday’s events were good for the most part with the major highlights being the Rock party in the evening. Other events include Cards Against Alcon with the Special Guests

Sunday

Sunday unlike many conventions was a jam-packed day of events including our panel on Weirdest Anime titled Did they really make that? The event was jam packed and the majority of people enjoyed the clips being shown and the humour that was being made throughout the talk. Other events included a yoai vs Yuri showdown that included creative uses of whipcream and Jollyboat live performance of comedy and pirate themed songs.

The final party of the weekend was probably the most epic one as it showcased some of the best anime openings from the past to the recent season.

Overall the convention was one of the most enjoyable events of the season. But the real feature of the convention was the atmosphere. Everyone was very open relaxed and very sociable . It took a little time to get used to such a relaxed convention . Most of the attendees and crew were very helpful and friendly and I would like to personally like to thank the PR crew for helping me over the convention not by helping me register for the convention but willing to talk to me . It shows how very open and welcome the community is. The other thing is lack politically correct filters on some of the attendees . People making jokes not worrying who to offend because we were all their to enjoy the convention. The event had people from various backgrounds, countries , religions all enjoying the events activites. Cosplayers from beginners to advanced to guys walking around in dresses and female cosplays.Straight, Gay, Trans it didn’t matter everyone seemed to enjoy the event. Everyone was treated with the same respect and welcomed none the less.

My only criticism of the convention would be the Bar.

Prices were expensive especially since I was converting euro to pounds and the heat over the weekend was crazy at times but knowing it was an improvised venue due to construction it had nothing to do with the convention organisers.

Regrets

I never had time to arrange an interview with the special guests due to scheduling conflicts . A lot of guests like myself couldn’t attend the VIP event due to our own panels on the Sunday.

Not going to this event sooner.

Would I recommend this convention?

For the first time I feel relaxed coming back from a convention. Everyone was very welcoming and major thanks to the nightcrew for helping intoxicated attendees get back safe to their rooms into the late hours of the morning.

Update on the Bella Sparkles incident

Following up on Mondays piece on the Bella Sparkles incident .

More news has now developed that the berated congoer has previously made a threat against Bella sparkles and her followers on Facebook.

Since the article has been published the followers and even international con goers have rallied together to report the meme that was shared on the Deadpool is Savage public page and his personal page from where once the image was shared in the first place

Removing the image from Facebook and giving the berated troll   a 24 ban on his personal page and his cosplay page.

Comments have also been made that this is some sort of social justice bullshit that needs to be stopped. From this writers viewpoint it has nothing to do with social justice but just not treating other people like shit. The world is enough of a horrible place half the time with stress , bills , debt , and a sea of overly politically driven ideologies –

But there is a silver lining to this story. It’s with the efforts of the good of the international convention community and international cosplay community that has given hope and encourage to not just Bella but every cosplayer no matter what race, age , weight or personal background that they are always welcome as long you enjoy yourself and treat others with the same respect as you would give yourself.

The Game Campanion

Thirty-something Bob lives downstairs in his mom’s house, works in fast food and has one friend. His greatest accomplishment is making it to master in a fighter-style video game, permitting him a game companion, Kimiko, which turns out to be real. Kimiko is impressed with Bob as ‘great warrior’, but when she starts to discover he is not very important in his own world, her enthusiasm fades.

Review : This crowd is the new Dead Gentlemen productions. What they may lack for in budget they make up in good writing and great actors for the film. A lot of the subtle jokes that only a few die hard gamers will get just makes this film so enjoyable . My only complaint is more people should get a chance to watch this film. 20 years ago you would never think the independent film crowds like these would flourish but I have a feeling from the great and funny short film that They will be a well known convention name. No matter where they go.

Our Experience

From Celebrities to cosplayers mingling with one another. The event was magical from Saturday . As the air itself was alight with excitement. It was a great environment as it felt like you were automatically accepted no matter what background you came from.

The Guests

Dealing with a wide range of Guests from Star Wars to Professional Comic Artists were friendly and most of all patient. It is amazing how so many of these people can spend an entire weekend being happy to greet their fan base . It puts a smile on anyone’s face just shows how great these people are.

Best Layout

While major trader had a presence at this convention . A few stood out the best . One of note was Replay Games . A convention veteran as traders go . I have never seen how good there professional display can be. We were amazed every form of game and anime merchandise was available . We only wished we had more money to spend.

Now for the negatives of the weekend

For all the good things lets talk about things that could of improved. Our two panels which were on the Sunday were different but due to some technical problems and lacking a projector for the weekend . Our panels were a little more chaotic than approaching panels with anime and niche conventions . But even with so we felt that we made best of a awkward  situation and the audience was entertained . But it still felt from a speakers side of things that you failed in someway and showed that your were unprofessional with your prep regardless of whether the audience enjoyed it or even if Showmasters themselves liked it . Maybe it shows that we are becoming the our own worst Critics. Overall the event for all attendees was abolsutely amazing. We will be talking about our experiences and highlights in our next episode . So stay tuned in the week
